I SLEPT SURPRISINGLY WELL DESPITE BEING on the ground. Phil from the hardware store showed up with the sun, a crew with him. The zombies were back in their graves, so I could lower the force field. They had the new window in place within the hour. I added wards to be on the safe side. Then Galen and I packed up and headed home.

“I’m starving,” I said when we arrived at our driveway. Wesley’s truck was there. “I bet breakfast is going to be delayed.”

Galen shot me a sympathetic look and rubbed my back. “It will be fine,” he promised. “I’ll cook while you take your lumps from Wesley.”

We headed straight into the kitchen, and to my surprise, I smelled eggs and bacon before I realized my grandfather was already cooking for us. My stomach rumbled out a ruthless growl.

“This is a nice surprise.” I was wary as I approached Wesley. “How did you know I was going to be so hungry I might gnaw an arm off?”

Wesley arched an eyebrow. “I heard about your little adventure last night.” He looked stern. “Young lady, there’s no reason to go to the cemetery alone when there’s a monster on the loose.”

I flicked my eyes to Galen, who looked amused. “That’s already been explained to me,” I said grimly. “I don’t need another lecture.”

“Good, because I’m not in the mood to give you one.” Wesley kissed my cheek. “Did the shattering glass cut you up?” A closer look at my chest and face had him frowning. “Has the glass been replaced?”

“It’s done,” Galen confirmed. “Hadley warded the glass too. I treated all her cuts. They were superficial. She has some bruising around her neck where the wendigo tried to strangle her, but there are worse things.”

“I guess.” Wesley didn’t look convinced, but he jerked his chin toward the table. “Sit. I made coffee too.”

“I’ll get the coffee,” Galen offered. His eyes roamed Wesley as he filled three mugs. “Not that I’m not happy to see you,” he started.

“But you would prefer some warning before I visit,” Wesley surmised. “I get it, and I don’t blame you, but I was up half the night and figured I’d come here straight away. When delivering bad news, it’s best to do it in person.”

My muscles hurt from sleeping on the ground, and I grunted as I sat. “This won’t be good,” I deduced. “Man, and just when I thought things were looking up. Eggs, bacon, coffee, and two of my favorite guys. What fresh horror are you dropping on us?”

Wesley made a sympathetic clucking sound with his tongue. “After the night you had, I’m sure you don’t want any bad news. But it can’t wait.” He turned to Galen. “There was another cow attack last night at the ranch. We were patrolling. We heard the cow screaming. By the time we got there, it was too late.”

“The cow was left behind again?” Galen queried.

Wesley nodded. “If this is a hunter trying to eat, it’s not going about it in a smart way.
